Joyce Kozyra

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to another school year! In case you have not heard, my name is Mrs. Joyce Kozyra and I have been assigned to be the principal at THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL. I am so excited and anxious to meet all of you. I come to you with many years of educational experience as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and more recently having served at Cucamonga Elementary School as their principal for the last 13 years.

I have been working closely with staff at THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL to prepare for the upcoming school year and am so impressed with all the wonderful educational and extracurricular activities that are already in place. My philosophy is that we are your partner in your child’s education

All students will attend school from 8 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. dismissal, INCLUDING KINDERGARTEN! Yes, we are continuing with our full day kindergarten program. Kindergarten students will follow the same bell schedule as all other students. Like last year, THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL will continue with the modified day. The students of THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL will continue to be released 50 minutes early every Thursday. This will enable time for teachers to plan the instructional program and to participate in professional development.  Please note that the modified day dismissal time is 1:45 p.m. When we have minimum day schedules the dismissal time will be 12:45 p.m.

I believe strongly in parent and community involvement and view parents as our partners in their child’s education.  I have an “open door” policy and will be available to both you and your children.

You are your child's first and best teacher in the following skill areas necessary for them to access academic learning. These are also skills that will help them be successful throughout life:

  • The value of wanting to learn what is being taught
  • The self-discipline to practice it over and over again
  • The guidance to always do their best work
  • The attitude that if at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again
  • The belief that their education is a priority in their life
  • Being organized, and neat in their work
  • Being a responsible worker

Research shows that the most important variable in a child's success in school is the parent’s involvement in the child's education.

The following are some ways to be involved in your child's education:

  • Talk with your child everyday about specifics of what is going on at school
  • Discuss the completed work the child has brought home
  • Check homework after it is complete
  • Be available to assist with homework as necessary
  • Set high standards for the work that is performed
  • It is important for students to have a regular work/study area without interruptions for optimum studying time
  • Guide the development of good study skills
  • Stay in touch with the classroom teacher via email
  • Call the teacher if work is not regularly coming home or homework is not assigned every night
  • Communicate high expectations to your child
  • Communicate your confidence and pride in your child frequently
  • Proudly display and share your child's work and progress with friends and relatives
  • Research shows that children need at least a full eight hours of sleep a night to perform their best in school

Also, keep in mind that parents best teach values and character. The school’s role is to reinforce the values, character, and work ethic that children learn and develop at home. Here at THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL our students are inspired to follow the ABCs of TOCS. Act respectfully, Be responsible, and Create a safe environment.

Our discipline philosophy is based on the research of positive behavior intervention supports and is outlined in detail within this handbook.

This handbook has been developed to acquaint you with the services, policies, rules, and procedures of our school.  Please keep it handy as a reference throughout the school year.  The calendar provided was established in July and is subject to change.  Please watch for communications from the school announcing dates and/or event changes and updates.

If you have any further questions or suggestions, please call, or visit the school.  If your question is concerning class events or instruction, please ask to speak to your child’s teacher.  If it involves the overall program, curriculum, or activities please contact me directly.  I am looking forward to a great year and getting to know each one of you!
