Why is summer reading so important?

  • Children need to engage with books every day so they can maintain, and ideally strengthen, all the literacy skills they learned during the previous school year.
  • It is estimated that school summer breaks will cause the average student to lose up to one month of instruction.
  • Children involved in summer library programs benefit academically from story hours, arts and crafts and other special events designed to enhance the reading experience.
  • Teachers typically spend between 4-6 weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.

What can you do to slow the "Summer slide?"

  • Participate in your local public library summer reading program.
  • Encourage your children to participate in our school Summer Reading Bingo game. Remember to return the Bingo card in August.
  • Use OverDrive on any digital device to read eBooks or to listen to audio books.
  • Read aloud to your child. It helps build vocabulary and listening comprehension skills.
  • Consider matching your child's "screen" time on video games or watching TV with the same number of minutes reading a book.
